Test Your Heat Now, Not on the First Cold Night: A Zion Crossroads Homeowner's Guide
It's the middle of August. Your heat hasn't run since sometime in March, and it probably won't need to until October. Which is exactly why now is the right time to turn it on.
Here's the pattern we see every single year. The first genuinely cold night arrives — usually somewhere in the back half of October, sometimes earlier — and thousands of people across Louisa, Fluvanna, and Orange counties reach for the thermostat on the same evening. Most of those systems fire up fine. But the ones that don't have been sitting broken since spring, and nobody knew it.
That's the problem with heating: unlike your AC, which announces itself the second it fails in July, a heating system can be dead for five months in total silence.
Why the first cold night is the worst possible time to find out
When a cold snap hits Central Virginia, every heating and cooling company in the region gets slammed on the same day. Schedules that were wide open on Tuesday are booked solid by Thursday morning.
If the company you call is based 25 to 35 minutes west in Charlottesville, you're in a long line, and you're at the far edge of their map. The calls closest to the shop get handled first. That's not a knock on them — it's just how dispatching works when everyone is triaging.

But even being local has limits when the phone rings off the hook for three straight days. The homeowners who sail through a cold snap are almost always the ones who found their problem in August.
The 15-minute test you can do this week
You don't need any tools and you don't need us for this part. Pick a cooler morning, or just accept that the house is going to get a little warm for a few minutes.
1.
Switch the thermostat from Cool to Heat, and push the setpoint about five degrees above the current room temperature.
2. Wait. Give it a couple of minutes. Some systems have a built-in delay before anything happens — that's a protective feature, not a fault.
3. Listen. You should hear the system start and settle into a steady sound. Banging, scraping, screeching, or a repeated clicking that never resolves into a start-up are all worth a call.
4. Go feel the vents. Air coming out should get noticeably warm within several minutes. Air that stays cool, or barely moves at all, is telling you something.
5. Let it run 15 to 20 minutes, then switch the thermostat back to Cool or Off.
If all of that goes smoothly, you're in good shape. If anything on that list felt off, you've just bought yourself two months to get it handled on a normal weekday instead of a freezing Sunday night.
That burning smell is probably fine
This one causes more panicked phone calls than anything else in the fall.
The first time your heat runs after a long summer off, it will very likely smell like something is burning. Dust settles on the heating components all summer long, and the first time they get hot, that dust burns off. It smells alarming. It is almost always nothing.
What's normal:
a dusty, slightly scorched smell that fades within 15 to 30 minutes of running and doesn't come back.
What isn't:
a smell that persists past the first hour or returns on later cycles. Anything that smells electrical, plastic, or acrid. Any smell of gas or rotten eggs — if you notice that, leave the house first and call your gas provider, then call us.
Running your heat now means you get the harmless version of this smell in August with the windows open, instead of on a night when opening the windows isn't an option.
Heat pump owners — know what "EM HEAT" actually does
A lot of homes around Zion Crossroads run on heat pumps, especially the newer construction going up in Spring Creek and along the corridor. If that's you, this is the single most expensive misunderstanding in home heating.
A heat pump doesn't burn fuel to make heat — it moves heat from outside air into your house. It's remarkably efficient. But when it's genuinely cold out, there's less heat outside to move, so most systems have a backup: electric resistance heat strips, which your thermostat may label
"AUX" or
"AUXILIARY".
Here's the important distinction:
AUX coming on by itself is normal.** Your system decides when it needs a boost. You don't have to do anything.
EM HEAT (emergency heat) is a manual override**, and it shuts your heat pump off entirely. Everything runs on those electric strips instead.
Electric resistance heat costs substantially more to run than a heat pump does. Switching to EM HEAT because the house feels a little cool and then forgetting about it is how people end up staring at a power bill in January wondering what happened.
The rule: EM HEAT is for when your heat pump is broken and you're waiting on a repair. It's not a "make it warmer faster" button. If you find yourself reaching for it because the house won't hold temperature, the thing to do is call us — something's wrong, and the override is just an expensive way to hide it.
The filter thing everybody forgets
When your system switches from cooling to heating, it's still pulling air through the same filter. A filter that's been quietly loading up since May is now restricting airflow for a job that needs airflow even more.
Check it before heating season starts. If you can't remember the last time you changed it, that answers the question. Newer homes are a special case here — construction dust keeps working its way out of a house for a year or more after move-in, and those filters load up faster than the package instructions suggest.
Your outdoor unit in winter — two things worth knowing
Don't cover it. If you have a heat pump, that outdoor unit runs all winter. Wrapping it up or covering it with a tarp blocks the airflow it needs and can trap moisture against the components. Keep it clear of leaves, mulch, and anything that's grown up against it over the summer — but leave it uncovered.
Steam is not smoke. On a cold day, you may walk outside and find your heat pump's outdoor unit venting steam and looking, frankly, like it's on fire. That's a defrost cycle: the unit deliberately reverses for a few minutes to melt frost off the outdoor coil, then goes back to heating. It's supposed to do that. What isn't normal is a unit that stays coated in ice, or one that seems to spend more time defrosting than heating.
What a fall tune-up actually covers
A heating tune-up isn't the same visit as a spring AC check, even on a system that does both. Different components carry the load in heating mode, and they get inspected differently — electrical connections and contactors, the heat exchanger or heat strips depending on your system type, the reversing valve on a heat pump, refrigerant charge, thermostat calibration and staging, safety controls, airflow, and the condensate path.
The honest reason to do it in early fall rather than late fall: if we find something, there's still time to order a part and get it handled before you actually need the heat. In December, the same finding turns into an emergency.
