           It's the question every homeowner eventually faces: the AC is acting up, the repair quote is sitting on the counter, and you're wondering whether you're fixing a system that has years left in it — or pouring money into one that's on its way out.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           Plenty of companies have an answer ready before they've even looked at your unit. Ours is simpler: it depends on the age of the system, and it's always your call — not ours.

           Here's the honest framework we use at Hunters Heating &amp;amp; Cooling when we're standing in front of your system.

    &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;

           Under 10 Years Old: Repair It
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h2&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           If your system is under 10 years old and still under warranty, repair is almost always the right move. Modern systems are built to run 15 years or more with basic care, and a warranty means major components are often covered. A young system with a problem is a system worth fixing.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           This matters for a lot of our neighbors in newer homes around Zion Crossroads — including the many families in Spring Creek whose systems went in with the house. If your home was built in the last decade, replacement almost certainly isn't on the table yet. What you want instead is regular maintenance that keeps the warranty valid and catches small problems before they become big ones.
          &#xD;

           10 to 15 Years: The Judgment Call
          &#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Once a system gets past 10 years and out of warranty, major repairs get harder to recommend. At that point, you're putting significant money into equipment that's already lived most of its expected life.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           But here's where we differ from the companies running on commission: it's not automatic. If you've had a healthy machine for 10 years and something weird comes up out of nowhere, sometimes it's worth giving that system the benefit of the doubt. A well-maintained unit with a clean history might have another 4 or 5 good years in it, and a sensible repair can buy you that time.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           That's a conversation, not a sales pitch. We'll tell you what the repair costs, what a replacement costs, and what we'd do if it were our house. Then you decide.

           (One common rule of thumb some homeowners like: multiply the system's age by the repair cost. If the number climbs past the price of a new unit, replacement usually wins. It's not gospel, but it's a useful gut check.)

           Here's the plain truth about older systems: after 15 years or so, most air handlers have accumulated enough buildup inside — on coils, in the blower assembly, throughout the system — that the equipment simply can't do its job the way it used to. Efficiency drops, repairs come closer together, and the money you spend fixing it is money that could have gone toward a system that will actually last.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;br/&gt;&#xD;
      
           At that point, it's usually the wiser choice to part with the old system. Not because we want to sell you one — because the math and the machine are both telling you the same thing.
          &#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           This is often the situation in some of the established homes in our area — the older houses along Route 15, longtime properties around Louisa and Gordonsville, places out toward Lake Anna where a system has been quietly working for two decades. If that sounds like your house, it's worth a conversation before the next heat wave or cold snap makes the decision for you.

  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Here's why July is peak failure season in Central Virginia — and what you can do before your system joins the casualty list.

    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Your AC works hardest exactly when it's weakest
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           An air conditioner doesn't create cold air; it moves heat from inside your home to outside. The hotter it is outdoors, the harder that transfer becomes. When Virginia afternoons push into the mid-90s with our signature humidity, your system runs longer cycles — sometimes nearly nonstop — at the outer edge of what it was designed to do.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           Every weak point in the system gets stress-tested at once. A capacitor that was marginal in May fails outright in July. A refrigerant charge that was slightly low means the system can't keep up, so it runs even longer, overheating the compressor. A clogged filter chokes airflow right when the system needs maximum airflow to survive.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;h4&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      
           The five most common July failures we see
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/h4&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           1. Capacitor failure.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The single most common summer service call. Capacitors give the compressor and fan motors their starting jolt, and heat kills them. Warning sign: the outdoor unit hums but the fan doesn't spin, or the system takes several tries to start.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           2. Frozen evaporator coil.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Sounds backwards — ice in July? — but restricted airflow (usually a dirty filter) lets the indoor coil get so cold it freezes over, and then no air moves at all. Warning sign: weak airflow from vents, ice on the refrigerant lines.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           3. Low refrigerant from a slow leak.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            The system cools, but never quite catches up. Your thermostat says 72 and the house sits at 78 all afternoon. Left alone, low refrigerant eventually destroys the compressor — the most expensive part in the system.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           4. Compressor overheating.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Long run times plus a dirty outdoor coil plus 95-degree air equals a compressor tripping on its thermal safety — or failing for good. Warning sign: the system shuts off mid-afternoon and works again after dark.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
      
           5. Drain line clogs.
          &#xD;
    &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        
            Virginia humidity means your AC pulls gallons of water out of the air daily. A clogged condensate drain backs that water up — into your ceiling, your floor, or a safety switch that shuts the whole system down.

    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;/p&gt;&#xD;
  &lt;p&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;

           What you can do this week (before anything breaks)
          &#xD;
    &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;

  &lt;ul&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Change the filter.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             If you can't remember the last time, it's overdue. This is the cheapest insurance in HVAC.
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Clear two feet around the outdoor unit.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Grass clippings, mulch, shrubs — anything blocking airflow makes the system run hotter.
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Rinse the outdoor coil.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Garden hose, gentle spray, power off first. A dirty coil can't dump heat.
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Listen.
           &#xD;
      &lt;/strong&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
        &lt;span&gt;&#xD;
          
             Grinding, clicking on startup, or a hum-without-spin are all early warnings — cheap to fix now, expensive to ignore.
            &#xD;
        &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;/span&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;/li&gt;&#xD;
    &lt;li&gt;&#xD;
      &lt;strong&gt;&#xD;
        
            Watch the temperature gap.
           &#xD;

             If your system can't hold within a few degrees of the thermostat setting on a hot afternoon, something's wrong. Don't wait for total failure.
            &#xD;
